Tokyo, Japan, Oct 15, 2005 - (JCNN) - Sanofi-aventis Japan announced on October 11 that it has acquired the rights to produce and sell Ancaron (amiodarone hydrochloride), an antiarrhythmic agent, from Taisho Pharmaceutical. Antiarrhythmic agents are effective in suppressing dysrhythmias because of their actions of decreasing membrane automaticity, slowing impulse conduction through the myocardium, and prolonging refractory periods. Given the lack of any evidence that these drugs improve survival, antiarrhythmic agents should generally be avoided in patients with non-life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias, even if the patients are experiencing unpleasant, but not life-threatening, symptoms or signs. |
