Her animus towards American anticommunism is not only inaccurate--the CPUSA was never outlawed--but also ironic, given that no American Communists were ever treated with such disregard for basic legal rights as the Canadians sequestered in the Gouzenko case, even though it seems a stretch to call the Mountie tactics "Gestapo-like. strategy in the Third World from anticommunism to pro-democracy; in the case of the Philippines, Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, Director of Central Intelligence William Casey and Donald Regan, Reagan's chief of staff, argued that abandoning Ferdinand Marcos for Corazon Aquino meant losing the Philippines to Soviet influence. The similarities between an era when rabid anticommunism threatened to undermine the very liberties and freedoms Americans feared the Soviets would deprive us of and our current willingness to surrender these same liberties in the war on terror are obvious. |
