antigenAny substance that causes the production of antibodies by the body's immune system. Common antigens include the proteins carried on the surface of bacteria, viruses, and pollen grains. The proteins of incompatible blood groups or tissues also act as antigens, which has to be taken into account in medical procedures such as blood transfusions and organ transplants. Dendritic cells are potent antigen-presenting cells that have the ability to initiate primary immune responses. The dynamics of helper and suppressor T cells and their interaction with antigen-presenting cells could be modeled as a separate subsystem, or module, whose output served as input to the B-cell module. A patrolling T cell might then encounter one of these antigen-presenting cells. |
