Antigonish

Town and administrative headquarters of Antigonish County, north-central Nova Scotia, Canada; population (1991) 4,900. It is 160 km/100 mi east-northeast of Halifax, near St Georges Bay. A trade centre, it is home to St Francis Xavier University (founded in 1853; located in the town since 1855), progenitor of the Antigonish (cooperative) Movement (1928), which transformed the lives of Acadian fishermen.
