Antinous

Antinous (lived 2nd century)

Favourite of Roman emperor Hadrian. He accompanied the emperor on his travels and drowned in the River Nile. Hadrian then decreed him a god, instituted festivals and founded the city of Antinoopolis, near the site of his death, in his honour.
