Antiphilus (lived 4th century BC)

Greek painter of the Alexandrian age. He worked for Philip II of Macedonia and Ptolemy I of Egypt. He invented a form of caricature called Grylli, featuring grotesque monsters that were part human, part animal or bird.

He is said to have been a rival of his contemporary Apelles. The Roman writer Quintilian describes him as ‘excelling in light and shade and caricature’, and Pliny mentions several of his works in various styles.
