Although older antipsychotics may offer a cheaper, equally effective alternative to newer ones, critical questions remain, comments a group led by psychiatrist Robert Freedman, editor of the American Journal of Psychiatry, in an accompanying editorial.
Abilify (aripiprazole), a dopamine partial agonist, which has a different action mechanism from the conventional antipsychotics, is a new option for schizophrenia.
Antipsychotics work by blocking dopamine in the brain, which often causes immediate side effects called extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS).
