Tobruk (or Tubruq)

Port, and only natural harbour, in Libya, 96 km/60 mi west of Bardia; population (1995 est) 127,000. The town has an oil refinery linked by a 560 km/348 mi pipeline to the Spirit oilfield. Another local industry is ship repair. Occupied by Italy in 1911, it was taken by Britain in 1941 during World War II, and unsuccessfully besieged by Axis forces April-December 1941. It was captured by Germany in June 1942 after the retreat of the main British force to Egypt. It was finally recaptured by the British in November 1942 (see Tobruk, Battles of).
