Anuradhapura

Ancient holy city in Sri Lanka; population 56,600 (2001) 741,000. It was the capital of the Sinhalese kings of Sri Lanka 5th century BC–8th century AD; rediscovered in the mid-19th century. Sacred in Buddhism, it claims a Bo tree descended from the one under which the Buddha became enlightened.
