Aomori| Port at the head of Mutsu Bay, on the north coast of Honshu island, Japan, 40 km/25 mi northeast of Hirosaki; population (2005) 311,500. Aomori is the chief town of the prefecture of the same name and has been a port since the establishment of harbour facilities in 1624. The port handles a large local trade in fish, rice, and timber. |
| Aomori is the gateway to Towada-Hachimantai National Park and has a fine natural harbour which was used for the ferry service to Hokkaido. This role ceased in 1988 with the opening of the Seikan Tunnel. |
| The Nebuta Festival, held between 3 and 7 August, is one of the most famous associated with the O-Bon season for remembrance of the dead. Floats, accompanied by singing and dancing, carry huge lit paper images through the city. A museum devoted to the woodcut artist Munakata Shiko (1903–75) can be found in the city. |
