Apalachin

Rural community in Owego township, Tioga County, south-central New York, USA; population (1990) 1,200. It is situated 23 km/14 mi west of Binghamton, on the Susquehanna River. It was the site of a 1957 organized-crime meeting at which mobsters from all over the country were surprised by state police.

A prominent character in the folklore of my childhood was Frank Zito, a local Mafia chieftain who had been arrested at the infamous Cosa Nostra conference at Apalachin, New York, in 1957.
