Aplvor, Denis (1916– )

Irish composer of Welsh origin. He was chorister at Hereford Cathedral, later at Christ Church, Oxford, and studied composition with Patrick Hadley and Alan Rawsthorne; later influences have included serialism.

She Stoops to Conquer (libretto by composer after Goldsmith; 1947), Yerma (1959), Ubu Roi (1966).

Orchestral

two symphonies; two violin concertos, piano concerto; clarinet concertante (1981); sonata for clarinet, piano, and percussion, violin and piano sonata; clarinet quintet (1981); wind quintet (1981).

Vocal

The Hollow Men (T S Eliot) for baritone, chorus, and orchestra (1939); Chaucer songs with string quartet (1936); songs with words by Federico García Lorca and others.
