Apollonia

Ancient town of Cyrenaica and harbour of Cyrene, 20 km/12 mi northeast of the latter. It was the birthplace of the Greek geographer and mathematician Eratosthenes.

Apollonia

Ancient city of Illyria, near the mouth of the Aous, founded by Corinthians and Corcyreans. It was important as a link between Brundisium and northern Greece, and subsequently as a terminus of the Via Egnatia. Towards the end of the 1st century BC it became a noted centre of learning; it was there that Octavian was studying under Athenodorus of Tarsus when news reached him of Caesar's murder 44 BC.
