Apostel, Hans Erich (1901-1972)

German-born Austrian composer. He entered Karlsruhe Conservatory in 1916, and later studied with Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg in Vienna, where he lived from 1921. In 1937 his Requiem won the Hertzka Prize.

Orchestral

Variations on a Theme of Haydn (1949); piano concerto.

Chamber

two string quartets.

Vocal

Requiem (text by Rilke) for eight-part chorus and orchestra; songs with piano or orchestra on texts by Trakl and Hölderlin.
