Appenzell

Village and capital of the Appenzell Inner-Rhoden demi-canton of Switzerland, on the River Sitter, 10 km/6 mi southeast of St Gallen; population (1995) 5,500. The village produces embroidery work and cheese.

Appenzell lies in a picturesque setting below Mount Santis. The Landsgemeinde general assembly is held here on the last Sunday in April.
