Appenzell Inner-Rhoden

Demi-canton in northeast Switzerland, enclosed within the canton of St Gallen; area 172 sq km/67 sq mi; population (1999 est) 14,900. It comprises the south and east sections of the former canton of Appenzell. Its capital is the city of Appenzell. The highest point in the demi-canton is Mount Santis (2,500 m/8,202 ft), which is surmounted by an observatory. Cattle rearing and dairy farming are the chief agricultural occupations. Embroidery from the region is highly regarded.

Appenzell Inner-Rhoden shares its history with that of Appenzell Ausser-Rhoden. A historic feature of the demi-canton is the yearly Landsgemeinde, or general assembly, held to elect local government officials and the representative to the Swiss Federal Assembly. Every adult male citizen must attend this open-air ceremony wearing a sword, and the executive is sworn in using an ancient code of laws known as the ‘Silver Book’.
