Appia, Adolphe

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.01 sec.

Appia, Adolphe (1862–1928)

Swiss stage designer and theorist. A proponent of symbolic design, he advocated reducing the importance of the actor as well as developing the atmospheric use of theatrical lighting.

His theories were expressed in Die Musik und die Inszenierung/Music and Staging 1899.

An admirer of Wagner, Appia rebelled against the prevailing illusionistic naturalism of the theatre of his time and advocated settings that would be ‘atmospheric’ rather than representational. He was the first to understand the artistic possibilities of electric stage lighting and to work out a complete theory of stage design based on it. Although he designed few productions himself, his ideas have had a great influence on modern stage practice.
