Appianus (or Appian) (c. AD 90–140)| Roman historian. Born at Alexandria, he settled in Rome c. AD 100, and practised as an advocate. He wrote a history of Rome, Rhomaika, in Greek; of the 24 books only 11 have survived. His style is clear and he supplies valuable information about the civil wars, but his knowledge of the Roman constitution is less impressive. |
