Mac OS

Official name of the Apple Macintosh operating system first introduced in 1984. Earlier versions were called System x.x, where x.x were the version numbers. Apple dropped the System label with the release of Mac OS 8.

OS X has been re-written to make use of the Unix operating system while still giving users the Macintosh look and feel with which they are familiar.
