iTunes| Software application that plays digital media such as video and audio files iTunes was first launched by Apple Corp in 2001 to accompany its range of iPod digital music devices. |
| iTunes can import tracks from a user's music CD, or can download music and other media files from the iTunes Store, which is Apple's on-line music shop. iTunes can be used to play the media files on a computer, and when an iPod is connected to the computer the media files are automatically synchronized onto the iPod. |
| In 2006 the one billionth song was downloaded from iTunes, and the lucky customer was rewarded with a computer, a number of iPods, and a $10,000 iTunes card. In January 2007 Apple announced that the number of songs downloaded had exceeded 2 billion. |
