Appleby

Market town in Cumbria, England, formerly the county town of Westmorland; population (2001) 1,320. It is situated on the River Eden, 21 km/13 mi southeast of Penrith. The castle, built on the site of a Norman keep, was restored by Lady Anne Clifford in the 17th century.

The church of St Lawrence has a monument to Lady Anne, and a church organ – one of the oldest in England – which was brought here from Carlisle Cathedral in 1684. Appleby holds an annual horse fair in June.
