Applecross

Village and mountainous peninsula in Highland unitary authority, Scotland, on the mainland coast of the Inner Sound; population (2001) 200. Its highest point is Beinn Bhàn at 896 m/2,939 ft. The Bealach-na-Ba (Gaelic ‘pass of the cattle’) rising to 626 m/2,087 ft was formerly the only land route to the village, sea access being the only viable passage during the winter months.

A monastery was built on the peninsula by St Maelrubha in AD 673, although little evidence of the foundation remains.
