Appleton| City in Calumet, Winnebago, and Outagamie (of which it is administrative headquarters) counties, east-central Wisconsin, USA; population (2000) 70,100. It is located 30 km/19 mi northwest of Oshkosh and 145 km/90mi north of Milwaukee, on the River Fox, near Lake Winnebago, in a rich dairying and farming region. Paper, pulp, paper and wood products, canned goods, beer, and building materials are among the city's manufactures. |
| Appleton was founded in 1847 and was incorporated as a city in 1857. It claims to have the world's first hydroelectric plant, built in 1882; the swift-flowing Fox River falls 10 m/33 ft within the city limits, and provided power for the project. Waterpower, which today generates electricity for the city and its surrounding area, was a major factor in Appleton's industrialization; in the 19th century it made the city a sawmill centre. Appleton is the home to Lawrence University (1847), as well as the Lawrence Conservatory of Music and the Institute of Paper Chemistry. |
