Appleton, William W(orthen) (1915- )

US literary historian and educator. Appleton's scholarly works focused on 17th- and 18th-century English literature and theatre and included A Cycle of Cathay (1951), Beaumont and Fletcher (1956), and books on Charles Macklin and Madame Vestris (1960 and 1974). He taught at Columbia University.
