electronic data interchange

In computing, system for managing business-to-business transactions such as invoicing and ordering to eliminate the wastefulness of paper-based transaction systems.

Traditionally, most EDI systems relied on proprietary protocols and private data networks, with the disadvantages that individual systems were incompatible. The growth of the Internet has opened the way for the rapid adoption of global electronic commerce.
