application service provider

Company providing access to computer applications via the Internet. By renting applications through an ASP, companies can avoid the task of procuring and implementing complex systems themselves, and, in some cases, cut down considerably on their in-house information technology infrastructure.

The term was coined in 1996 by Jostein Eikland, a Norwegian video and movie producer who started up one of the first companies to offer this service.
