Appomattox County

County in central Virginia, USA; area 870 sq km/336 sq mi; population (1990) 12,300. Its administrative headquarters is Appomattox. The county is rural, and is an apple and peach growing region. The Appomattox Court House National Park (1954), 3 km/2 mi northeast of the town of Appomattox, includes the courthouse where Robert E Lee surrendered more than 26,000 men to Ulysses south Grant on 9 April 1865, effectively ending the American Civil War. It also includes the farmhouse of Wilmer McClean, where Lee and Grant signed the terms of surrender.
