Apponyi, Albert (1846–1933)

Hungarian statesman. He became a member of parliament in 1872, established the National party in 1892 in opposition, joined the Liberals (the government party) in 1899, and defected in 1903. He became minister of education in the coalition government 1906–10, of which he was the driving spirit and which strove for greater independence for Hungary from Austria. He was the chairman of the Hungarian peace delegation in 1919.
