Apurímac| Department in the south-central highlands of Peru; area 20,896 sq km/8,068 sq mi; population (1996) 409,506. This is a mountainous region in the Cordillera Occidental of the Andes. It is criss-crossed by temperate, fertile valleys, and is watered by the River Apurímac and its tributaries. Potatoes, barley, and maize are produced in Apurímac; livestock, such as sheep and alpacas, are also reared. The departmental capital is Abancay, but Andahuaylas is a more important commercial centre. |
