Apuré

River in west-central Venezuela, which rises in the Cordillera Oriental of the Andes in Colombia and flows east into the River Orinoco, and is formed by the union of the Uribante and Sarare rivers; length 800 km/497 mi (together with the River Uribante it measures 960 km/597 mi). The chief towns on its banks are San Fernando de Apuré and Puerto de Nutrias. It is navigable for over half of its total length. Its main tributaries are the Portuguesa and the Santo Domingo rivers.

Apuré

State in west-central Venezuela, bounded on the southwest by the Colombian frontier, on the north by the states of Tachira, Barinas, and Guarico, and on the east by the state of Bolívar; area 76,500 sq km/29,537 sq mi; population (1996) 382,572. Apure consists of vast llanos (plains) in the Orinoco basin. The capital is San Fernando de Apuré.
