Apurímac

River in Peru, which rises in the department of Arequipa; length 1,000 km/621 mi. It flows in a northwesterly direction, finally joining the Urubamba to form the Ucayali, which in turn becomes the Amazon.

Apurímac

Department in the south-central highlands of Peru; area 20,896 sq km/8,068 sq mi; population (1996) 409,506. This is a mountainous region in the Cordillera Occidental of the Andes. It is criss-crossed by temperate, fertile valleys, and is watered by the River Apurímac and its tributaries. Potatoes, barley, and maize are produced in Apurímac; livestock, such as sheep and alpacas, are also reared. The departmental capital is Abancay, but Andahuaylas is a more important commercial centre.

A mud slide in Apurímac on 18 February 1997 devastated two small Peruvian villages and claimed 33 lives.

A considerable portion of the YF endemic zone would therefore be expected to comprise either premontane forest (from 500 m to 1,500 m) or humid montane forest (1,500 m to 3,500 m), as these are the vegetation formations in the states of Amazonas, San Martin, Huanuco, Pasco, Junin, Ayacucho, Cusco, and Puno, and the adjacent portions of Apurimac and Madre de Dio (34).
The snow-fed stream, which flows into the Apurimac River, was identified as the source by a National Geographic team in 1971, but that designation fell into question when recent expeditions found another contender about 7 km away.
