Aquifoliaceae

The holly family, which contains about 300 species of trees and shrubs with evergreen leathery leaves whose edges are often spiny. The flowers generally have their parts in fours. The male and female flowers are on separate plants, the females having red or yellow fruits, usually called berries, but technically drupes. Ilex, the holly, is the main genus.
