Ramadi| Capital of Al Anbar governorate, Iraq, on the River Euphrates, 100 km/62 mi west of Baghdad; population (2001 est) 388,300. It was established in 1869 to encourage the settlement of nomadic tribes and its growth was stimulated by the completion in 1955 of a nearby dam across the Euphrates. It is the starting-point for the highway across the desert to Jordan. |
