Aracaju

Port and capital of Sergipe state in northeast Brazil, 275 km/171 mi northeast of Salvador (Bahía); population (1996) 420,901. Aracaju is located on the right bank of the estuary of the Sergipe River, about 10 km/6 mi from its mouth. Its main industries are sugar-refining, cotton mills, textiles, and tanneries. Its chief exports are cotton, sugar, hides, coffee, rice, vegetable oils, coconuts, and potassium.
