Arafura Sea

Area of the Pacific Ocean between northern Australia and Indonesia, bounded by the Timor Sea in the west and the Coral Sea, via the Torres Strait, in the east; 1,290 km/800 mi long and 560 km/350 mi wide. It lies on the Arafura Shelf, and is 50–80 m/165–265 ft deep. The Indonesian Aru islands lie to the north. To the northwest, the Aru Trough (3,650 m/12,000 ft deep) separates the Arafura Sea from the Banda Sea.
