Arafura Sea

Area of the Pacific Ocean between northern Australia and Indonesia, bounded by the Timor Sea in the west and the Coral Sea, via the Torres Strait, in the east; 1,290 km/800 mi long and 560 km/350 mi wide. It lies on the Arafura Shelf, and is 50-80 m/165-265 ft deep. The Indonesian Aru islands lie to the north. To the northwest, the Aru Trough (3,650 m/12,000 ft deep) separates the Arafura Sea from the Banda Sea.

Like its sister rivers, the Roper, draining eastward into the Gulf of Carpentiara, and the Mary, which carries the wet season floods north into Van Diemen Gulf and the Arafura Sea, the Daly was closed to commercial fishing in the 1980s to protect the stocks.
We anchored in the shallow Arafura Sea some dozen miles off the Asmat, which is the most extensive marsh in the world; it is also the last region in which both headhunting and cannibalism are practiced, although now on a moderate scale.
