Araia (or Araja), Francesco (1709–c. 1770)

Italian composer. He produced his first opera in 1729. From 1735 he was for 24 years opera director to the Russian court in St Petersburg, where he produced several of his own works, Il finto Nino (1737), Artaserse (1738), Scipione (1745), Mitridate (1747), and Bellerofonte (1750). Another was Cephalus and Procris (1755), the first opera given in Russia known to have been sung in Russian and not in Italian.
