Arak

Capital of Markazi province, western Iran, 275 km/171 mi southwest of Tehran; population (1991) 331,400. Arak is situated in the Zagros mountains, and is on the Trans-Iranian railway. The city is a trading centre for carpets, pottery, and metalwork.
