Arcadelt, Jacob (c. 1505-c. 1567)

Netherlandish or French composer. He wrote Masses and motets, but is particularly noted for his Italian madrigals.

He entered the papal chapel in Rome in 1540, and received prebends in 1545 at St Barthélemy and St Pierre, Liège, from Pope Paul III. In 1551 he left papal service to go to France and, in 1554, entered the service of Charles, Duke of Guise, who was eventually appointed archbishop of Rheims. Arcadelt may also have been associated with the royal chapel of France for a time, for he was described as a musician of the king in 1557.
