Arcata

Town in Humboldt County, northwest California, USA; population (2000) 16,700. It is situated on the northeast of Arcata (Humboldt) Bay, 10 km/6 mi northeast of Eureka and 88 km/54 mi south of the Oregon border. Founded in 1850, it was a meeting point for mule trains carrying mining supplies over mountain trails; Bret Harte lived and wrote here later in the decade. Humboldt State University (1913) now dominates the city's life. Tourists are drawn to local marshes, the bay, and the city's many Victorian homes.
