Archytas of Tarentum (c. 428–347 BC)

Greek philosopher of the Pythagorean school, scientist, and general. He was an intimate friend of Plato. Archytas was the founder of scientific mechanics, and did much to advance the study of music and acoustics. He evolved an ingenious method of doubling the cube. Some fragments of his ethical and metaphysical writings have survived.
