| Genus of evergreen shrubs of the heather family Ericaceae. A. uva-ursi, the bearberry, is native to Britain, northern Europe, northern Asia, and North America; it was once cultivated for uses in medicine, tanning, and dyeing. American species such as A. pungens, grown in gardens, are often known as manzanita. |
