Ardèche| River in southeast France, rising in the Cévennes and flowing southeast to the Rhône; length 120 km/75 mi. Near Vallon it flows under the Pont-d'Arc, a natural bridge. It gives its name to the département of Ardèche. The spectacular gorges of the Ardèche, cut into limestone, can be explored by canoe or from a twisting tourist road. |
Ardèche| Département in the Rhône-Alpes region of France; area 5,523 sq km/2,132 sq mi; population (1999 est) 286,000. The area is mountainous, containing part of the Vivarais mountain range in the west. The River Ardèche flows through the southeast of the département. The Ardèche gorges, cut through limestone, attract many tourists. Cereals, vines, chestnuts, mushrooms, and olives are produced. Coal and iron are mined. The administrative centre is Privas (population (2001 est) 92,000). |
