Ardashir I

King of Persia 224–41, founder of the Sassanid dynasty and the Sassanian Empire. Having reduced to submission the province of Fars, he defeated Artabanus V, the last of the Parthian kings, and entered Ctesiphon in triumph. War with the Romans 232 ended in the reoccupation of Nisibis and Carrhae by the Persians.

Ardashir retained the Parthian feudal system but introduced a greater degree of centralization, and made the army into a powerful instrument for the execution of his policy. He made Zoroastrianism the state religion, and the chief Zoroastrian dignitary became one of the chief officials of the state.
