turnstone

Any small wading shorebirds of the genus Arenaria, order Charadriiformes, especially the ruddy turnstone A. interpres, which breeds in the Arctic and migrates to the southern hemisphere. It is seen on rocky beaches, turning over stones for small crustaceans and insects. It is about 23 cm/9 in long and has a summer plumage of black and chestnut above, white below; it is duller in winter.
