Arenga

One of the palms that produce a type of sago and palm wine, found in all the islands of the Indian archipelago. The only species is A. saccharifera. The trunk is covered with coarse black fibres, which are made into rope.

It yields a large amount of transparent sap, which soon becomes turbid and milky; when fit for drinking it is yellowish, astringent, and very intoxicating.
