Argento, Dominick

Argento, Dominick (1927– )

US composer. He studied with Alan Hovhaness and Howard Hanson at the Eastman School of Music, New York, and with Luigi Dallapiccola in Italy. His music is in an agreeably tonal idiom.

Orchestral

A Ring of Time (1972), Five Variations (1982); Capriccio: Rossini in Paris, for clarinet and orchestra (1985).

Oratorio

Jonah and the Whale (1973).

choral music and song-cycles, including Six Elizabethan Songs for voice and ensemble (1958); In Praise of Music (1977); Casa Guidi, five songs for mezzo and orchestra (1983); Le Tombeau d'Edgar Poe (1985).
