In World War I, battle fought 30 November–3 December 1916 on the line of the Argesul River. A joint Austro-German force defeated Romanian armies attempting to defend Bucharest with a pincer movement from the north and south.

Romanian resistance was initially strong, but the failure of their reserves to arrive due to the treachery of General Sosescu followed by the arrival of German reinforcements led to their collapse, and Bucharest was occupied by the Germans 6 December 1916.
