Argo

Very large, bright constellation of the southern hemisphere, represented as a ship. It was described by Greek Astronomer Ptolemy in the second century AD, but now, to avoid confusion, is split into four: Carina, ‘the Keel’; Puppis, ‘the Stern’; Vela, ‘the Sails’; and Pyxis, ‘the Compass’. The last was formed from stars in Malus, ‘the Mast’, another former subdivision of Argo that has not survived as a separate constellation.
