A row of thatched haystacks at Oban in Argyllshire, Scotland. Traditional circular haystacks are built by arranging sheaves outwards in concentric circles, making sure that the centre of the stack is higher than the edge so as to shed rain outwards. The stacks are then thatched with straw to give further protection from the rain.

Former county on the west coast of Scotland, including the Inner Hebridean Islands, which was for the most part merged into Argyll and Bute district in Strathclyde region in 1975.

The greater part of Argyllshire is now within the bounds of Argyll and Bute unitary authority.
